The Odisha Government has agreed in principle to several key wBenefits,elfare proposals submitted by the Odisha State Bar Council, marking an important step towards strengthening financial security, healthcare support and professional development for advocates across the state.

The proposals were discussed during a meeting at the State Secretariat between Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan and a Bar Council delegation led by Chairman Sitanshu Mohan Dwibedy. The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the welfare of advocates and encouraged the council to work closely with the state in implementing the proposed initiatives.

The government has agreed to provide land for establishing a law academy under the Odisha State Bar Council. The proposed institution will focus on enhancing the knowledge and professional skills of advocates. A temporary training facility will also be provided until the permanent infrastructure is developed.

The welfare measures include increasing the Advocates’ Retirement-cum-Death Benefit to Rs 9 lakh, extending Madhubabu Health Insurance Scheme coverage of Rs 5 lakh to advocates and raising the government’s matching grant from Rs 10 crore to Rs 15 crore. The government has also sought the Bar Council’s views on the proposed Advocates’ Protection Bill.

The initiatives are expected to create a stronger welfare framework for Odisha’s legal community while improving access to financial assistance, healthcare coverage and professional training.
