Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo of the Orissa High Court has been appointed as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court in Bihar. The appointment was made by President of India Droupadi Murmu by exercising the powers conferred under clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo will assume charge as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court with effect from the date he takes over the office. The official notification stated that the President is pleased to appoint Justice Sahoo, currently serving as a Judge of the Orissa High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.

The appointment follows the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, which had earlier proposed Justice Sahoo’s name for the top judicial post in the Patna High Court. His elevation is seen as a significant step, particularly in view of the heavy pendency of cases faced by the Patna High Court.

Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo was enrolled as an advocate in 1989 and has had a distinguished legal career spanning over three decades. He is widely known for his expertise in criminal law and service law. In July 2014, he was elevated to the bench of the Orissa High Court, where he delivered several important judgments and earned a reputation for judicial clarity and administrative efficiency.

In addition to his judicial responsibilities, Justice Sahoo also served as the Executive Chairman of the Odisha State Legal Services Authority, where he played a key role in strengthening access to justice and legal aid services. His experience in judicial administration and legal services is expected to benefit the Patna High Court, especially at a time when the institution is dealing with a substantial backlog of cases.

With his appointment as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo is expected to bring administrative reforms, enhance judicial efficiency, and contribute to the timely disposal of cases. His leadership is anticipated to strengthen the functioning of the Patna High Court and improve access to justice in Bihar.
