Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan Deemed to be University has taken a significant step toward enhancing companion animal welfare with the launch of a dedicated Spa and Grooming Centre for pet dogs and cats in Bhubaneswar. The state of the art facility has been established by the Institute of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry under the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences at SOA University and is located at Campus 4 of the university.

The newly inaugurated centre aims to provide professional grooming, hygiene and wellness services for companion animals under expert supervision. IVSAH Dean Sushanta Kumar Das said the facility is managed by highly trained groomers who work closely under the guidance of experienced veterinarians to ensure safe and scientific care for pets. The centre features modern infrastructure, air conditioned grooming spaces and the latest equipment to offer a comfortable and stress free environment for animals.

Highlighting the importance of veterinary responsibility, SOA Vice Chancellor Professor Pradipta Kumar Nanda said animals and birds are sentient beings who cannot express pain or discomfort. He emphasized that it is the duty of veterinarians to understand their condition and relieve their suffering, adding that the new grooming centre will play a vital role in reducing stress and discomfort among companion animals.

Chief Medical Officer at IVSAH, Niranjan Sahu, drew attention to the serious health risks associated with neglecting regular grooming, especially in India’s tropical climate. He explained that natural biological processes such as hair shedding, oil secretion, ear wax accumulation and nail growth can lead to unhygienic conditions if not managed properly. The warm and variable climate also encourages the spread of ectoparasites like ticks, lice and fleas, which are carriers of dangerous diseases such as babesiosis, anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis that may lead to fatal multi organ failure in pets.

The Spa and Grooming Centre offers a comprehensive range of services including washing, hair cutting, nail trimming, ear cleaning, face styling, detangling and hair brushing for all breeds of dogs and cats, whether small, medium or large. Pet owners can opt for customized haircuts for long haired breeds and also choose additional premium grooming services based on their pet’s specific needs.

Sahu further explained that professional grooming provides multiple health benefits beyond appearance. It helps prevent painful matting, removes dead skin and debris, improves blood circulation, reduces excessive shedding, and eliminates parasites to prevent reinfestation. Regular grooming also allows early detection of skin problems, lumps, warts or infections. Proper nail trimming prevents posture issues, arthritis and skeletal deformities, while ear cleaning lowers the risk of ear infections and aural hematomas. Regular visits to the centre help ensure pets remain clean, shiny and healthy, he added.
