Odisha’s cultural heritage has received national recognition with Puri Rath Yatra, Cuttack Bali Yatra, Odissi and Mayurbhanj Chhau Dance being included in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of India.

The announcement was made by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat while responding to a query raised by Rajya Sabha MP Dilip Kumar Ray in the Upper House of Parliament.

The identification, documentation and inclusion of these traditions were undertaken through the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the nodal institution responsible for maintaining India’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The recognition highlights their cultural importance and contribution to the country’s diverse living traditions. 

The Centre has also been promoting Odisha’s cultural traditions through documentation, training, workshops, financial assistance and participation in national and international cultural programmes. Odia art forms have been showcased at platforms including Republic Day celebrations, UNESCO events, SCO cultural programmes and Expo 2025 in Osaka.

Chhau Dance already holds international recognition through its inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The inclusion of these four traditions in the national inventory further strengthens Odisha’s cultural identity while supporting the preservation and promotion of its living heritage.
