Despite being far from India’s tense borders, Odias have consistently answered the nation’s call—with courage that soars in the skies, marches on land, and sails across seas.

A Legacy of Defiance: From Paikas to Patriots

The roots of Odisha’s valour can be traced back to the Paika Rebellion of 1817, a significant early resistance against British rule, led by the fearless Bakshi Jagabandhu. Even earlier, Jayee Rajguru sacrificed his life in 1806, sparking the spirit of resistance on Odia soil.

This legacy was carried forward by indomitable tribal leaders such as Chakara Bisoi and Laxman Nayak, who rallied their communities against colonial dominance. Spiritual reformers like Bhima Bhoi added depth to the movement, championing justice and compassion through their words.

In 1938, 12-year-old Baji Rout became the youngest martyr in India’s struggle for freedom, shot dead for refusing to assist British soldiers. His sacrifice continues to symbolise Odisha’s unflinching spirit.

In post-independence India, Odisha’s contributions to the armed forces remain nothing short of remarkable. Its sons and daughters have played key roles in some of the nation’s most defining military moments.

Army

Major Padmapani Acharya, born in 1969, exemplified courage during the Kargil War. Leading his unit under heavy fire, he stormed enemy bunkers and secured a crucial post, all while gravely injured. He was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra—India’s second-highest wartime gallantry award.

More recently, Major Prabhanjan Padhy led a bold anti-terror operation in South Kashmir, eliminating two militants without any loss to his team. His fearless leadership earned him the Sena Medal in 2024.

Navy

Odisha’s maritime legacy is well-reflected in the bravery of Lieutenant Bimal Ranjan Behera from Kendrapada. In March 2023, during a high-stakes fuel transfer operation, he plunged into perilous waters to prevent a disaster at sea. His swift and selfless act earned him the Shaurya Chakra.

The state also salutes Vice Admiral S.H. Sarma, who led the Eastern Fleet during the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Under his command, India achieved crucial naval victories. Awarded the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, his commitment to the nation endured well beyond his naval service.

Air Force

Odia valour also graces the skies. Air Marshal Dilip Kumar Patnaik, a veteran of the Kargil War, conducted the first laser-guided bomb strike on Tiger Hill. He later became the first Odia pilot to fly the Rafale fighter jet, and was honoured with the Vayu Sena Medal for his exceptional service.

Back on the ground, Squadron Leader Manisha Padhy from Bhubaneswar made history as the first Indian woman to serve as an Aide-de-Camp to a Governor—marking a proud moment for both Odisha and women in defence.
