Odisha’s VIMSAR to Build State’s First Government Hospital Helipad for Airlifting Critical Patients

In a landmark step toward improving emergency healthcare infrastructure, the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla is all set to become the first government hospital in Odisha to construct its own helipad for airlifting critically ill patients. This ambitious project, aimed at facilitating helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS), is now gaining momentum after years of planning and preparation.
The helipad will play a crucial role in enabling faster and more efficient transport of patients requiring specialized treatment for life-threatening conditions such as cancer, cardiac ailments, and traumatic injuries. With advanced hospitals located in major cities like Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Chennai, VIMSAR's helipad will bridge the gap between rural patients and tertiary medical care across India.
According to VIMSAR Superintendent Dr. Lalmohan Nayak, the idea of setting up a helipad was first announced three years ago, and now, with land selection and demarcation complete, the project is set to move into its implementation phase. Sambalpur Sadar tehsildar Manoj Kujur confirmed that the required land for the helipad has already been identified and marked. This critical development paves the way for faster execution of the project, which will significantly strengthen the state’s emergency medical response system.
Dr. Nayak emphasized the need for such an infrastructure by pointing out that VIMSAR refers approximately 4 to 5 patients every month to other hospitals for urgent care, particularly those suffering from advanced cancer and cardiac conditions. Additionally, patients involved in severe road accidents or critical trauma cases are frequently shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, which is equipped for highly specialized surgeries. Currently, this transfer is done by road, often causing delays that could cost lives. With the upcoming helipad, such emergency transfers will be faster, safer, and more efficient, potentially saving countless lives.
The helipad project is part of VIMSAR’s broader vision to modernize healthcare delivery in western Odisha and ensure equitable access to critical care for patients in underserved regions. Once operational, this helipad will be a game-changer in Odisha’s public healthcare system, especially for remote and time-sensitive medical emergencies.
