Odisha’s Debrigarh Set for World Class Ecotourism Makeover After Approval of Rs 71 Crore Project

Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Odisha’s Bargarh district is gearing up for a major ecotourism transformation after the Forest and Environment Department approved a Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth Rs 71.19 crore. The ambitious plan aims to elevate Debrigarh into a world class nature tourism hub while generating sustainable livelihoods for local communities and strengthening wildlife conservation efforts.

The project focuses on creating immersive nature experiences, including elevated log house tents set on wooden platforms and a stunning 300 metre canopy walkway soaring nearly 100 feet above the forest floor. This elevated walkway will offer travellers a breathtaking bird’s eye view of the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity, making Debrigarh a standout destination in eastern India. The sanctuary will also introduce dedicated nature meditation camps that allow visitors to connect with the serene environment.

Divisional Forest Officer of Hirakud Wildlife Division, Anshu Pragyan Das, said that most of the initiatives would be executed within the current financial year. She emphasized that the upgrades will help attract more tourists while providing new livelihood opportunities for families living around the sanctuary, particularly in areas affected by human-wildlife conflict.

The approved DPR includes a strategic focus on sustainable tourism, enhanced infrastructure, and community based livelihood generation. Officials clarified that the proposed 100 km physical barrier planned along the sanctuary boundary to reduce human animal conflict will be funded separately under CAMPA or other state schemes. Importantly, the barrier will avoid forest corridors and contiguous patches to ensure unhindered wildlife movement.

Adding to its ecotourism appeal, Debrigarh recently launched a rustic homestay facility at Dhodrokusum village at the foothills of the sanctuary near the Hirakud Wetland. The project will further expand village homestays from five to fifteen, offering tourists an authentic rural living experience. Additionally, twenty eco-friendly tents will be set up at Zero Point, located outside the sanctuary amid lush agricultural fields.

Key upgrades include the replacement of old safari vehicles and cruise boats, revamping the Island Café on the Hirakud reservoir, and improving existing visitor amenities such as the ecotourism booking counter, souvenir shop, and information center. A striking glass and wood meditation center with space for eighty people will also be developed, serving as a venue for nature education programs, storytelling sessions, and quiet retreats.

With this comprehensive ecotourism initiative, Debrigarh is set to emerge as one of Odisha’s most attractive sustainable tourism destinations, blending conservation with local community development and immersive nature-based experiences.
