From Fish Market to National Fame: Odisha Teen Mousumi Simalai Wins Gold in Rifle Shooting

In a remarkable display of grit, determination, and talent, 14-year-old Mousumi Simalai from Paralakhemundi in Odisha’s Gajapati district has brought glory to the state by clinching the Gold Medal in Rifle Shooting at the prestigious All India Thal Sainik Camp (AITSC) 2025, held in New Delhi. Mousumi, a Class IX student at Centurion Public School, overcame stiff competition from more than 1,200 cadets across the country to secure the top position in the NCC Junior Wing Girls category. Her victory was announced during the camp, which was held from September 2 to September 11, 2025, and featured 1,546 cadets from 17 NCC Directorates competing in various disciplines.
What makes Mousumi’s achievement truly inspirational is her humble background. She is the daughter of Manika and Balai Chand, who work as fish vendors near Gajapati Stadium to support their family. Despite limited financial resources, Mousumi never allowed hardship to block her path to success. With relentless training, discipline, and an unyielding spirit, she transformed her dreams into a golden reality on the national stage. Her story has already started resonating across Odisha and India, symbolising how perseverance and hard work can overcome barriers of class, caste, and circumstance. Locals in Paralakhemundi are preparing a hero’s welcome for Mousumi as she returns from Delhi, celebrating her as a true champion of determination.
The victory has also brought immense pride to Centurion Public School, where Mousumi is enrolled. The school leadership, including President Dr. Mukti Mishra, Vice President D.N. Rao, Director Durga Prasad Padhi, Registrar Anita Patra, Principal Sunita Panigrahee, Regional Director Sambeet Patra, Vice Principal J.K. Nayak, Administrator Santosh Deo, Dean Dr. S.P. Nanda, and mentor Anumatangi Guru, have hailed Mousumi as the “Golden Girl of Gajapati.” The school community has emphasised that her success reflects not just personal brilliance but also the supportive environment created by the institution to nurture young talents.
Mousumi’s rise from the bustling fish markets of Paralakhemundi to the elite shooting ranges of Delhi is more than just a sports achievement, it is a story of courage, discipline, and the ability to dream big despite challenges. Her journey is now being seen as a beacon of hope for underprivileged children across Odisha, inspiring many to chase their dreams regardless of circumstances.
