Asian TT Team Championship: Bhubaneswar Hosts Another Successful International Event

The ITTF-ATTU Asian Table Tennis Team Championships concluded successfully at the iconic Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, marking yet another international sporting milestone for Odisha’s capital city. The five-day championship brought together over 500 players and officials from 22 countries, showcasing top-tier table tennis action and the state’s growing reputation as a premier sports destination. Odisha, known for hosting world-class events such as the FIH Men’s and Junior Hockey World Cups, FIH Pro League, Asian Athletics Championships, World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meet, SAFF Championship, and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, once again demonstrated its impeccable organisational capabilities and sports infrastructure.

The Asian Table Tennis Team Championships, hosted in Bhubaneswar for the first time, saw the Chinese teams dominate the tournament and clinch a double crown. The Chinese men’s team triumphed over Hong Kong with a commanding 3-0 victory in the final, while the women’s team outclassed Japan 3-0 in the title clash, reaffirming China’s supremacy in the sport.

For India, it was a disappointing campaign on home soil, as the men’s team finished sixth and the women’s team settled for the eighth position. Despite the results, the event was celebrated for its smooth conduct, vibrant atmosphere, and excellent facilities that earned praise from participants and officials alike.

Sheikha Hayat Al Khalifa, acting regional vice-president of the Asian Table Tennis Union (ATTU), commended the Odisha government, local organisers, and the Indian Table Tennis Association for their dedication and professionalism. She expressed her gratitude on behalf of ATTU president Khalil Al-Mohannadi, noting that the championship’s success reflected the collaborative efforts of everyone involved.

The closing ceremony, held in the presence of Odisha Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati and State Sports Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, was a grand affair. The Governor presented the winners’ trophy to Team China, applauding their outstanding performance. With the successful hosting of the Asian TT Team Championships, Bhubaneswar once again reinforced its status as a global sports hub, capable of delivering world-class events with excellence and enthusiasm.
