Puri Jagannath Temple Restricts Entry to Singhadwara During Panchuka for Devotee Safety

In view of the massive influx of devotees during the sacred month of Kartika, the Shree Jagannath Temple administration in Puri, Odisha, has announced a new entry regulation for Panchuka from November 2 to 5. To ensure smooth darshan and prevent any stampede-like situation, devotees will be allowed to enter the 12th-century shrine only through the Singhadwara, also known as the Lions’ Gate. However, devotees can exit through the remaining three gates of the temple.
According to Puri Collector Dibyajyoti Parida, the decision was taken as the temple has witnessed nearly a threefold rise in the number of devotees since the beginning of the holy month. Even during late hours, the temple premises remain crowded with pilgrims eager to seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath. Although Cyclone Montha caused a brief dip in footfall for two days, the crowd surged again soon after, creating a need for strict crowd management measures.
To maintain order and ensure the safety of all visitors, similar restrictions had earlier been implemented during New Year celebrations on December 31 and January 1 when more than three lakh tourists were expected to visit Puri. Temple servitors, however, are exempt from these entry rules. The administration has urged devotees to cooperate and follow the guidelines so that darshan remains organized and peaceful.
Special arrangements have also been made for Habisyalis — elderly devotees observing the Kartika Habisa Brata, who visit the temple and partake of food only once daily in the afternoon. A dedicated corridor has been created for them to enter the temple conveniently. In addition, help desks have been set up at all four gates to assist visitors and provide information about the new arrangements.
To further streamline crowd movement, barricades along Badadanda have been extended up to Market Chhak. A seven-lane queue system now leads to the Lions’ Gate, ensuring a disciplined and hassle-free entry for pilgrims. Volunteers, Jagannath Temple Police (JTP), and other support staff will be deployed in shifts to assist elderly, differently-abled, and ailing devotees. The administration has also arranged drinking water stations at key points to ensure the comfort and safety of pilgrims.
This well-coordinated effort by the Puri district administration and the Shree Jagannath Temple authorities aims to provide a smooth, safe, and spiritually fulfilling experience to thousands of devotees visiting during the auspicious Panchuka days of Kartika month.
