Odisha Government Announces Rs 1 Crore Grant and Honorarium for 200 Artistes Ahead of Bargarh Dhanu Jatra 2025

The Odisha government has announced a financial grant of Rs 1 crore for the world-famous Bargarh Dhanu Jatra, the largest open-air theatre festival in the world. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, who emphasised celebrating the 78th edition of the festival in a grand and culturally enriching manner.

As part of the support package, nearly 200 artistes will receive an honorarium of Rs 10,000 each, recognising their contribution to the iconic eleven-day event that transforms Bargarh into the mythological kingdom of Mathura. The river Jeera symbolically becomes the Yamuna, while Ambapali across the river is recreated as Gopapur, bringing the legendary tale of Krishna and Kansa to life.

To enhance visitor experience and boost cultural tourism, the government has planned the construction of Dhanu Jatra-themed welcome gates at key entry points to Bargarh town. Special tourist buses from Bhubaneswar and Puri will operate during the festival period, ensuring smooth connectivity for devotees and tourists.

A dedicated official website will also be developed to provide comprehensive information including event schedules, videos, major landmarks, hotel details, parking facilities, venue maps, and GPS-based navigation support. To create awareness among young learners, a digital quiz will be hosted on the portal, and participants will receive digital certificates.

Minister Suryabanshi Suraj directed officials to ensure tight security arrangements, fire safety measures, proper sanitation, emergency medical services, and seamless administrative coordination for the smooth conduct of the festival starting December 24.

The meeting was attended by key public representatives and senior officials, including Bargarh MP Pradip Purohit, Bijepur MLA Sanat Kumar Gartia, Attabira MLA Nihar Ranjan Mahanand, Bhatli MLA Irashis Acharya, Bargarh MLA Ashwini Kumar Sarangi, Padmapur MLA Barsha Singh Bariha, Development Commissioner-cum-ACS Anu Garg, Odia Language, Literature and Culture Secretary Dr Bijay Ketan Upadhyay, Special Secretary Deba Prasad Dash, and Bargarh Collector Aditya Goyal.

The government’s renewed focus and substantial financial support underline its commitment to preserving and promoting Odisha’s rich cultural heritage as Dhanu Jatra continues its legacy as one of the state’s most vibrant and celebrated festivals.
