Odia Diaspora Welcomes PM Modi in Johannesburg with Vibrant Sambalpuri Dance Performance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm and culturally rich welcome in Johannesburg as members of the Odia diaspora greeted him with an electrifying Sambalpuri dance performance upon his arrival for the G20 Summit. The lively reception took place at the Johannesburg airport on Friday, where the Indian community organised a colourful cultural showcase titled Rhythms of a United India.

The programme highlighted the rich diversity of Indian folk traditions, featuring performances representing 11 states including Odisha, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan. Each troupe showcased the unique cultural rhythms of their region, reflecting India’s unity in diversity on an international stage.

Odisha’s cultural flavour shone brightly through an energetic Sambalpuri folk dance presented by Sasmita Meher, Sasmita Behera, Suchismita Panda, Dipanshi Behera, Lipsa Mohanty, and Elina Behera. Dancing to the popular Sambalpuri song Ame Sambalpuria Phula Re, the performers captivated the crowd with their graceful choreography, rhythmic footwork, and vibrant costumes. Their presentation celebrated the essence of Sambalpur and highlighted the Odia community’s strong cultural pride abroad.

Speaking about the performance, dancer Sasmita expressed gratitude for the honour of welcoming the Prime Minister. She noted that the opportunity filled the Odia diaspora with pride as they showcased a beloved Sambalpuri number that reflects the region’s cultural identity and heritage.

Prime Minister Modi lauded the diaspora’s effort, praising the event as a powerful representation of India’s cultural unity. Sharing his appreciation on X, he highlighted how the Indian community in South Africa continues to stay rooted in tradition while promoting the country’s diverse artistic expressions on the global stage.

The vibrant welcome in Johannesburg underscored the deep cultural bond shared by the Indian diaspora and reaffirmed the global presence of Odisha’s iconic Sambalpuri folk art.
