Book on Odisha’s Rich Maritime Heritage ‘Naubanijyaru Mahatab’ Released in Rourkela
A new book titled Naubanijyaru Mahatab, which explores the maritime history of Odisha from ancient times to the modern era, was recently launched in a grand ceremony held in Rourkela. The book, authored by renowned maritime historian Dr. Lalatendu Das Mohapatra, offers a detailed chronicle of Odisha’s seafaring legacy and its profound influence on global trade and cultural exchange. Dr. Mohapatra, a former Deputy Director of the National Archives of India, brings decades of research and expertise to this comprehensive work.
The launch event witnessed the presence of distinguished scholars, writers, and intellectuals from across Rourkela. Eminent rationalist and Marxist thinker Gagan Bihari Dhal officially released the book, while Dr. Pravat Kumar Mallik, retired Professor of History, provided a scholarly review highlighting the book’s historical depth and research value. The ceremony was presided over by Pasupati Nath Chatterjee, President of the Cultural Academy, with Nagen Ku Das delivering the vote of thanks.
Naubanijyaru Mahatab traces the illustrious maritime legacy of ancient Kalinga—modern-day coastal Odisha—which stood as a formidable maritime power between the 7th century BCE and the 13th century CE. Kalinga’s skilled merchants and navigators established flourishing trade routes and cultural ties with Southeast Asia and other distant lands. Through its thriving maritime activities, Kalinga not only engaged in commerce but also played a pivotal role in spreading Indian art, architecture, and religious philosophies, including Buddhism and Hinduism, across Asia.
The book provides valuable insights into Odisha’s maritime achievements, the evolution of its ports, shipbuilding techniques, trade practices, and the enduring cultural exchanges that shaped its identity as a global maritime hub. It also connects this glorious past with the modern era, reflecting on how Odisha continues to celebrate its seafaring traditions through festivals like Boita Bandana and Bali Jatra.
The release of Naubanijyaru Mahatab marks a significant contribution to the study of Odisha’s maritime history, offering readers and scholars an authentic and engaging account of the region’s oceanic heritage that continues to inspire pride and cultural continuity.
