₹39.95 Crore Plan To Transform Deomali Into A Major Eco-Tourism Destination In Odisha

The Odisha government has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) worth ₹39.95 crore for the integrated development of Deomali in Koraput district. The project aims to transform Odisha’s highest peak into a world-class eco-tourism destination while creating employment opportunities and strengthening the local tribal economy.

Deomali, the highest mountain peak in Odisha and one of the most scenic locations in the Eastern Ghats, is known for its lush green landscapes, waterfalls, trekking routes and rich biodiversity. The proposed project focuses on improving tourism infrastructure while preserving the region’s natural and cultural heritage.

As part of the plan, Kunduli Haat Square will be developed as a tourism gateway, along with an indigenous market to promote and sell tribal products. The project also includes the construction of a grand welcome gate, viewpoints, rest houses, visitor information centres, improved lighting at Taupadar and other essential tourist amenities.

Officials said the initiative will also boost tourism at nearby attractions such as Putsil, Girli Mali and Talamali Valley, creating better travel experiences for visitors and opening up new livelihood opportunities for local communities through tourism-related businesses.

The development is expected to generate employment in hospitality, transport, handicrafts and other allied sectors, while providing tribal artisans and entrepreneurs with better market access for their traditional products.

The project is expected to begin after receiving the necessary approvals. Once completed, it is likely to position Deomali as one of eastern India’s leading eco-tourism destinations, balancing sustainable tourism with economic growth and tribal development.
